Sam Middleton reflects through his works (paintings, collages and lithography) his early years spent in the effervescent Harlem's neighborhood of Manhattan, New York and the serene Dutch landscape, where he settled in the early 1960s.

In the early 1950s, Middleton was part of Cedar Tavern scene in New York's Greenwich Village, an incubator for the Beat writers and Abstract Expressionist painters, which included his friends Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline.

Sam Middleton developed a personal style in the language of Abstract Expressionism, often basing his colour, line, and compositions on sound and harmony, echoes from Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie or Charlie Parker
