Spenser's Faerie Queene. A poem in six books.
London, George Allen, 1897. Six volumes in six. Large 4to (27.3 x 21.2 cm). Uniform pebbled half morocco over green grained boards. Spines with two raised bands, gilt and red orenaments and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Original printed wrappers bound in.
A famous poem by a contemporary compatriot of William Shakespeare. Richly illustrated in Art Nouveau style by Walter Crane (88 full- page woodcut illustrations and 132 head and tailpieces, and numerous woodcut initials). It took Crane three years to complete the work.
The editor, Thomas J. Wise, added most useful information on the 1590 first and 1596 second edition, as well as on some later (early 17th century) folio editions.
Printed on hand-made paper. Limited edition, issued in 1,000 copies. Fore and bottom edge uncut. Former owner's name in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto. Minimal shelf wear, the most at spine feet, but not more than to be expected from a 120 years old set. Some spotting and foxing on a few leaves in the first volume, otherwise mostly clean. In all an excellent set, rarely seen in these beautiful morocco bindings!
