The art of bodywork seems naturally associated with Italy. Along with other applied arts, bodywork has reacted to the avatars of history by sometimes blending artistic trends. We have played with these more or less accidental incidences. From time to time, dialogues have been opened between design and visual arts; from afar, there have been perceptible echoes in architecture or cinema. This wide panorama embraces the different facets of Italian bodywork, from style to design. We discover the industrial activity, with the production set by the manufacturers or designed by external consultants. The coachbuilders, who have produced custom-made products in a traditional way or on a more industrial scale, are also presented in this chronological study. The designers and stylists who, at the bodyshops, have created unique pieces, special bodywork or concept cars, are not forgotten. This breakdown shows the diversity of the Italian bodywork, its flirtations with the major arts and its place in the birth of industrial design.
